The SD is the clear, direct instruction given by the therapist. It tells the child exactly what they need to do. A good SD is short and avoids extra, confusing words. Instead of saying, “Can you be a good helper and hand me the blue car?”, the therapist will just say, “Give me blue.”
2. Prompt
Sometimes a child needs a little help to get the right answer, especially when learning something totally new. A prompt is a hint the therapist gives at the same time as the SD. This could be pointing to the right card, gently guiding the child’s hand, or showing them a picture. The goal is to help them get it right so they avoid getting frustrated and wanting to quit.
3. Response
The response is exactly what the child does after hearing the instruction. There are generally only three ways a child will respond during a teaching session:
- They do the task correctly.
- They do the task incorrectly.
- They do not respond at all.
4. Consequence
What happens immediately after the child responds is called the consequence. If the child gets the answer right, the therapist gives a reinforcer right away. This could be a high-five, a piece of a favorite snack, or a quick tickle. If the child gets it wrong or does not answer, the therapist simply corrects the mistake in a neutral voice and moves on, without making a big deal out of it.
5. Inter-trial interval
This is the brief pause between the end of one trial and the beginning of the next. It usually lasts just two to three seconds. This short break lets the child know that the previous task is totally finished and gives them a second to clear their head before the therapist gives the next instruction.

How to Track DTT Data Effectively?
Data is the backbone of any ABA program. When running DTT, a therapist usually repeats the same trial several times in a row, often in blocks of ten. To track this properly, the therapist must record the outcome of every single trial the exact second it happens.
They need to write down if the child got it right on their own, if they needed a prompt, or if they got it wrong. Waiting until the appointment finishes to take notes often causes therapists to forget important specifics, resulting in inaccurate records.
Accurate tracking shows exactly when a child is ready to move on to a harder skill and when they need more practice.
DTT vs. Naturalistic Teaching: When to Use Each
DTT is very formal and usually happens sitting at a table. It is incredibly helpful for teaching brand new skills, improving focus, or teaching things that require strict repetition. However, because it is so structured, children sometimes struggle to use those skills in the real world outside of the clinic room.
Naturalistic teaching (NET), on the other hand, happens during normal play. If a child reaches for a toy train on the floor, the therapist might use that moment to ask the child to say “train.”
NET is perfect for teaching social skills and helping children use the things they learned at the table out in their everyday life. Most good ABA clinics use a healthy mix of both methods.
