What is pairing in ABA?

Pairing is the deliberate process of associating a therapist, setting, or materials with things the learner already enjoys, so that the person and place themselves become signals that good things happen here.

Before any demand is worth presenting, the person presenting it has to matter. Pairing is how that is built: early sessions where the therapist delivers preferred items and activities freely - no instructions, no contingencies - until approaching the therapist, the table, and the materials is itself something the learner seeks out.

The mechanism is respondent: repeatedly experienced alongside reinforcers, the previously neutral therapist acquires reinforcing value. Practically, it looks like following the learner's lead, being the reliable source of the fun, and keeping early demands near zero so nothing poisons the association.

Pairing is not a one-time onboarding step. It is redone after breaks, after illness, after a hard stretch of sessions, and continuously in small ways - a favorite activity interleaved between work, delivery of reinforcers kept warm and social. Clinicians often describe the balance as making deposits before making withdrawals.

The observable test of pairing is approach behavior: does the learner orient to the therapist's arrival, come to the work area willingly, stay without being held there? Those indicators - and their absence - are also central to assent-based practice, where a learner's willingness to participate is monitored as part of the session itself.

Skipping or rushing pairing shows up later as escape-maintained behavior around demands and a therapist whose instructions carry no weight. Programs that struggle at the table often need less instruction engineering and more relationship repair - which is exactly what re-pairing is.
