ABA Glossary

What is a mand in ABA?

A mand is the verbal operant of requesting - communication occasioned by wanting something and reinforced by getting it, whether the request is spoken, signed, exchanged as a picture, or produced on a device.

The mand is the only verbal operant that directly benefits the speaker: the child who says 'juice' gets juice. Because the reinforcement is exactly what the learner already wants, mands are typically the first communication skill taught in early language programs - motivation is built in.

A true mand is controlled by the learner's motivation in the moment, which is why mand training revolves around motivating operations. A request for juice can only be taught when juice is actually wanted; the skilled part of mand training is capturing those moments or contriving them - putting the desired item in sight but out of reach, pausing a favorite activity, handing over a container that needs help to open.

Manding matters well beyond politeness. A large share of challenging behavior functions as a request - for attention, for escape from a demand, for a tangible item - made in the only form the learner currently has. Teaching an effective mand for the same outcome, often called functional communication training, gives the learner a better tool and is one of the most common function-based interventions.

Mands are also where communication modality decisions play out first. Whether a learner speaks, signs, or uses an exchange or device system, the earliest targets are usually mands, and a well-run program tracks manding across the day - spontaneous versus prompted, across people and settings - rather than only in structured sessions.

In data terms, a manding repertoire is judged by independence and spread: how many distinct things the learner can request, how often requests occur without prompts, and whether they travel to new listeners and environments. Those are the numbers a supervising clinician reads before deciding what to teach next.
