ABA Glossary

What is a motivating operation in ABA?

A motivating operation is a condition that temporarily changes how valuable a consequence is and how likely the behaviors that produce it become - deprivation and satiation being the everyday examples.

Reinforcers are not equally reinforcing all the time. Water is powerful after recess in the sun and worthless right after a drink; attention matters more after time alone; a toy loses pull after an hour of access. The conditions that produce those swings are motivating operations, and they sit upstream of everything else in a teaching session.

MOs act in two directions. An establishing operation makes a consequence more valuable and momentarily evokes the behaviors that have produced it - hunger both makes food better and makes food-seeking more likely. An abolishing operation does the reverse: after a big snack, food-maintained behavior fades on its own.

Skilled clinicians manage MOs deliberately rather than hoping for them. Mand training depends on it - a request can only be taught when the thing is actually wanted - so therapists capture natural moments of motivation and contrive others: preferred items visible but out of reach, activities that pause and need a word to resume, materials missing one necessary piece.

MOs also explain a lot of day-to-day variability that otherwise gets misread. A learner who 'refused to work' after a poor night's sleep or a skipped breakfast isn't showing program failure; the MOs shifted, and the reinforcers on offer lost ground. Teams that note setting events alongside session data can tell those days apart from genuine regression.

The concept keeps programs honest about preference, too: what functioned as a reinforcer last month may not today, which is why preference is rechecked routinely rather than assumed from a one-time list.
