What is an echoic in ABA?
An echoic is the verbal operant of vocal imitation - repeating what was just heard, with the response matching the model sound for sound.
When a therapist says 'ball' and the learner says 'ball' back, that is an echoic: a vocal response controlled by a vocal model, matching it in form. It differs from answering a question or making a request - nothing is wanted and nothing is being labeled; the behavior is the match itself.
Echoics carry outsized importance in early language teaching because they are the bridge into everything else. A learner who can reliably repeat a model can be taught new words by transfer: the therapist models 'car' while showing a car, the learner echoes it, and over successive trials the model is faded until the sight of the car alone occasions the word - the echoic has become a tact. The same transfer builds mands and intraverbals.
Echoic training usually starts with sounds and approximations rather than whole words, and it interlocks with shaping - reinforcing closer and closer matches to the model. For learners with limited vocal repertoires, clinicians often begin with sounds the learner already produces and build outward.
Not all repetition is teaching progress. Echolalia - repeating heard speech in ways that don't serve a communicative function in the moment - is formally similar but functionally different, and clinicians distinguish the two by looking at what the repetition does for the learner rather than how it sounds.
Progress in echoic programs is read from articulation accuracy and the transfer record: how quickly an echoed word becomes usable as a label or request. An echoic repertoire that never transfers is a drill, not a language skill - so well-built programs measure the handoff, not just the echo.
