Every trial has the same shape: the instructor presents a clear instruction or cue, the learner responds, and the instructor delivers reinforcement for a correct response or a prompt and correction for an incorrect one, followed by a short pause before the next trial.
That structure is what makes DTT useful for skills needing many repetitions to establish - early language, imitation, matching, discrimination - and it produces unusually clean data, since every trial yields a recorded result.
DTT is normally one part of a program rather than the whole of it. Skills established at the table still have to hold up in real situations, so teams pair it with teaching in the natural environment.
The value of the format is control. Because each trial is identical in structure, the instructor can isolate one variable at a time - the instruction, the prompt level, the reinforcer - and see its effect clearly. That also makes DTT well suited to skills that need many repetitions before they become fluent, and to learners for whom a less structured format offers too little clarity about what is being asked.
How trials are arranged matters. Massed practice runs many trials of the same target in a row and establishes a response quickly, but can produce rote responding. Interspersing targets with already-mastered ones keeps success rates high and reduces frustration, while varying targets within a session supports discrimination. Most programs move from massed toward varied arrangements as a skill establishes.
